Chapter 3 · attack

Attack: Trap the King

Attack the weakest square

Every king has a weak spot — usually the squares in front of it. When three pawns stand in a row, the squares behind them are guarded only by the king. That is called the back rank, and it is where most beginner games end.

Bring more attackers than defenders

One attacker against one defender is an even fight. Two against one wins. Three against one crushes. Before you start an attack, count: how many of my pieces point at the target, and how many of theirs can defend it? Attack only when the count is in your favor.

Open a file

Rooks are strongest on open files — columns with no pawns in the way. Push or trade the pawns in front of your opponent’s king and your rook suddenly has a straight road straight to the target.

Watch your own king

Attacking is exciting, but while your pieces chase, your own king sits at home. Check what is left behind before you send everything forward. The best attacks happen when your king is safe.

Your turn — solve the puzzle

Click the piece, then click the square it moves to.

The back rank is the weakest wall. Break it.
